Worship Update 2/20

Jay's Devotion

The Game of Sorry
For Christmas my daughter received the game Sorry. I don’t know if you have played this game, but it is one step above Candy Land in the world of board games that can drive adults crazy. We have played somewhere in the range of 75 times. I know this because we have a running log on how many times each of us has won. I am in second place with 25 wins. (I am not proud of this stat J)

It’s a game I am really looking forward to stopping, forever. Once Macy grows out of it I will burn it so Ava doesn’t even know it exists. Some games are just not meant to be played, and that one has outworn its welcome.

I play other games… games with God, games that are not meant to be played. He’ll tell me either through His Word, or through His spirit to stop an action, thought, or behavior. Rather than just obeying Him completely, I’ll play a “sorry” game of seeing how much of one or all three of the particular action, thought or behavior I can manage and still be “good enough”. The result is always the same… pain, hurt, and destruction.

The freedom, the joy, of complete obedience to God, so far outweighs the game playing that each time I wonder how I got sucked in again. But 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

When our enemy finds us playing the game, he is happy because he has us right where he wants us; and he will either destroy us or, by the grace of God, we will stop playing, and fully surrender.
Where in your life have you bought the lie, settled for another game of “Sorry”, and not fully surrendered?

Special Opportunity
Want free concert tickets?
LMG Concerts, a local concert promoter, is looking to build a pool of show volunteers who will get a free show ticket! Shift positions might be 8am – 1pm, 1pm – 5pm, 5pm – 10pm, and 10pm to whenever things are loaded up and buses leave. Depending on what you do, you’ll either get free entrance for yourself or 2 tickets, one for yourself and one for a friend.
