Worship Update 8/14

From Jay

Red Bull Hearts

There are friends in my life who are stressful for me to be around… I love them, but they stress me out. They are constantly fidgeting, moving, shifting, talking fast, never calm, always kinetic until they crash and sleep. They are like walking cans of Red Bull.

I contrast that with my mother in law Vicki, and her demeanor. Her eyes are full of life. But her presence is calm. She is at peace. And you feel calm around her.

I believe our hearts are like walking cans of Red Bull. They are constantly looking, moving, shifting, searching for meaning, for purpose, for love. They have to have it. Your heart won’t rest until it finds it. And I believe Satan would be content to keep us on a wild goose chase the rest of our lives. He continually offers this or that or the other thing, promising it will meet the hearts longing; he then laughs in our face when it doesn’t, but quickly gets right back to work pitching the same thing as long as we will bite.

I’m on a journey right now in my walk… it’s about how to find my foundational longing(s) met in Christ. I’m on a journey to find out what it means to find my peace in Him, to press into Him. So easy to say, but finding out what this ACTUALLY looks like in real time, in real life, is a lot harder. What I am learning slowly is when my longing intensifies, when I’m feeling restless, alone, when my heart begins to wander and search, I need to let it. I need to wait. I need to quit trying to quickly numb it and preoccupy it, and instead wait and search for Christ, patiently.

What about you? Are you letting your heart always settle for cheap imitations that don’t ultimately satisfy? What are some ways you have been duped with your heart longings? What is the biggest one you are being offered right now? Where have you tried to satisfy the longings and found it left you emptier than before, or at least side tracked from the real deal? I, for one, am so burnt out on cheap imitations that I am on a quest for the real deal.

Psalms 33:18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,
on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.

Psalms 39:7 But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.

Psalms 43:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Proverbs 13:12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Seasons of Service

W&CA Service Project!
Saturday, August 22nd, 8a-3p
Remember our W&CA work day last year at Vernonia? This year we're adopting the William Walker work day as part of our church-wide Seasons of Service. We'll be doing things like laying bark dust, planting flowers, pulling weeds, etc.

We know that this work will bless an entire community of staff, teachers, students and families.
Lunch and beverages will be provided. Work teams are being formed and team leaders are still needed. If you're able to join us, please RSVP to Cindy Heinz cindyheinz@sunsetpres.org with the number of people coming with you. We'll plan to meet there: 11940 SW Lynn Field Lane, Portland, OR 97225.

Helping Hands Is Moving To Mod Building!
FINALLY, the modular building on the West end of our campus is the new site of our Helping Hands Community Center. It has been all cleared out and is ready for volunteers to put in a new laminate floor (donated by a person in our church and that unskilled people can put in), put in shelving and new appliances (also donated). If you can help Saturday, August 22nd beginning at 7a, we will be pulling in the new laminate flooring. Then on Saturday, August 29th we will be moving and installing the shelving and appliances.
